Cancer & Infusion Center Receives Generous Donation from Grayling Promotional Association
02.26.2015

After opening its doors a little over one year ago, the Grayling Cancer & Infusion Center has become one of the hospital’s busiest departments. With its scenic views, convenient location, and specially designed healing environment, it’s no surprise that a growing number of patients are choosing to have their treatment closer to their homes.

“The Grayling Promotional Association is a community focused group that believes that when people work together, great things are possible,” said Maureen Barkume, President of the Grayling Promotional Association (GPA). “The Grayling Cancer & Infusion Center is dedicated to serving patients and their families who are affected by cancer and we are proud to support them in the work they do.”

The GPA works cooperatively for the benefit, education and promotion of the community of Grayling and has supported Grayling Hospital’s mission for nearly 20 years, contributing more than $20,000 to strengthen its many programs and services. This most recent donation will be used to add an additional recliner chair to the center, allowing more patients to access the center’s services.

“We are deeply grateful to the Grayling Promotional Association for their generous donation, which will enable the Grayling Cancer & Infusion Center to better serve its patients,” said Stephanie J. Riemer, President and CEO of Grayling Hospital. “Cancer is a disease that touches everyone’s lives, and with the generous support of our communities, we will be able to continue to provide these important treatment services close to our patients’ homes.”

The dramatic increase in patient volumes has also brought on an increased need for staff education and training. Many of the Grayling Cancer & Infusion Center’s nurses are working to become Oncology Certified Nurses® (OCN). “Certifications like this can help patients feel more comfortable about their caregivers,” said Annette Mosher, RN, OCN, who recently earned her certification. “When it comes to patient care, knowledgeable nurses are better prepared to recognize problems and take action.” In a recent study published by the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, certified nurses scored higher on knowledge of pain and nausea – among the most common symptoms of concern in patients with cancer – than noncertified nurses.

This combination of community support and staff development has made a noticeable impact on the level of care delivered at the center. “We like that the center is close to home,” said Richard and Diane Malcolm, who traveled to the center for treatment from their home in Roscommon. “We have enjoyed coming here and are very pleased with our care. Our favorite part is the staff. When you don’t know what you’re getting into with a diagnosis like this, they are very knowledgeable and helpful.”
