Public invited to Presbyterian Church for resources in living with the disease

Texas teacher Kate Lilly “freaked out” when she learned she had diabetes in 2007. Now she is helping encourage others with the condition to live full lives.

Lilly will be the guest speaker at a free Diabetes Open House from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City.

The event is sponsored by Munson Medical Center Diabetes Education and the Northern Michigan Diabetes Initiative. Participants will learn the latest information on medications, heart health, community resources, and more. Munson Medical Center certified diabetes educators will be on hand to answer questions. There also will be diabetes exhibits and vendors.

Lilly said she encourages others with the disease to test often, eat well and pay attention to their bodies.

“I am much more aware of my health,” she said. Lilly will share information about overcoming the fears surrounding diabetes, achieving good glucose control and developing a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

Area residents also are invited to bring and donate their extra Halloween candy for U.S. troops during the event.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

The Presbyterian Church is located at 701 Westminster Road in Traverse City. For details visit munsonhealthcare.org/diabeteseducation or nmdi.org/diabetes-events.
