Medical social worker shares tips for managing stress of the chronic disease

Coping with a diabetes diagnosis is never easy. Many people respond naturally with surprise, stress, and a lot of questions.

Munson Medical Center Medical Social Worker David Rushlow, L.M.S.W., will offer a free program to help diabetes patients cope with the emotions created by the disease from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12 in the hospital’s Conference Center Room 1.

“It really is important for people to know that they can live a full life, despite the disease,” Rushlow said.

The program will cover common emotional responses to diabetes, such as guilt, anger, and depression. It also will offer tips for managing stress and hints to help people stay grounded and well equipped to manage their health and relationships. People are encouraged to bring their own story about being diagnosed with the disease.

Rushow is a licensed social worker and has worked at Munson Medical Center for more than 30 years. He has extensive experience in diabetes and has been providing stress management education to the diabetes community for more than 20 years.

The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. For questions, contact Munson Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Department at 231-935-8200 or 800-809-8127.
