Family gatherings for the holidays often include tables of delicious and traditional food that can become a recipe for trouble for gastroesophageal reflux disease sufferers.
Individuals suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have an alternative to daily medications for treating their painful chronic heartburn. An incisionless surgical solution is being performed by West Shore Medical Center general surgeons.
GERD is caused by changes in the body’s natural antireflux valve. Normally, the valve opens after swallowing to allow food to pass, then closes to prevent stomach contents from refluxing into the esophagus. But for millions of Americans, this valve does not function properly, and acid and other stomach contents enter the esophagus, causing discomfort and, in some cases, damaging the esophagus.
Common treatment options such as diet and lifestyle changes and medications can help alleviate GERD symptoms but do not resolve the underlying anatomical problem.
Conventional antireflux surgery is an effective long-term solution; however, it is invasive and often reserved for only the most advanced cases.
In contrast, Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) is an incisionless procedure based on long-established principles of conventional reflux surgery. During the innovative procedure, an EsophyX device and endoscope are gently inserted through the mouth. The device forms tissue folds to reconstruct the antireflux valve where the esophagus and stomach meet.
Benefits to TIF include no external skin incisions or scarring; no internal cutting or dissecting, shorter recovery time; fewer adverse events and complications; and no limit to future treatment options.
