Self-management course helps people live with the chronic condition

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center’s Diabetes Education wants to help area residents diagnosed with diabetes experience a better quality of life.

Diabetes Education Manager Katie Daman, R.N., said the hospital offers a two-part self-management course designed to provide those diagnosed with the disease a better understanding of how to cope and live well.

“The program assists people in taking control of their diabetes and helps develop skills to manage at home,” she said. “Most people will see a reduction in their A1C as a result of the course.”

Participants will learn:
• Basics about diabetes and how it affects the body
• How to choose healthy food
• Ways to be active
• How to safely take medication
• How to monitor blood sugar
• How to problem-solve issues
• Healthy ways to cope
• How to reduce risks

The program consists of individual and group classes, all held at the hospital.
