Munson Healthcare (MHC), Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (HDVCH), and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSUCHM) have partnered to bring a Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellow (PGY4/1st year fellowship) to northern Michigan for a clinical rotation in Community Hospital Medicine.

As part of their post-graduate year 4 (PGY4), a HDVCH/MSUCHM fellow will now have an option to complete a 30-day clinical rotation in Community Hospital Medicine at Munson Medical Center (MMC). The MMC clinical rotation will provide an immersion experience in Community Hospital Medicine (outside HDVCH’s tertiary care pediatric center) and will include newborn care, pediatric inpatient care, ED consults, and administrative duties common to the community hospitalist, such as QI/Patient Safety meetings, peer review, etc. Each fellow will receive mentorship and support from the host hospital’s pediatrics hospital team. The fellow will work with a multidisciplinary team to learn decision making and challenges specific to rural healthcare.

“This new partnership is a testament to the level of pediatric care offered at Munson Medical Center and our strong collaboration with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital,” said Jacques Burgess, MD; Pediatrician, Sound Physicians. “We are excited to offer a Pediatric Hospital Medicine PGY4 clinical rotation in our rural northern Michigan community.”

This will be an ongoing partnership with 1-2 fellows visiting each year. MMC will host its first visiting HDVCH/MSUCHM fellow – Lee Morris, MD – in April-May 2022. Dr. Morris is a board-certified physician practicing Pediatric Hospital Medicine at HDVCH.

Dr. Lee Morris grew up in the small Great Plains town of Sabin, Minn. After attending college for English, he worked as editor of a community newspaper in Valley City, N.D. Building on a desire to make a difference, he took up pre-medicine studies at the University of N.D. before enrolling in medical school at the University of Minnesota, Minn., where he fell in love with pediatrics. He completed his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., earning the Excellence in Teaching Award for his contribution to resident and student learning. He is ecstatically proud to be doing his pediatric hospitalist medicine fellowship at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich. His research interests include medical education with a focus on underperforming medical learners.
