Munson Medical Center offers options for portion of Halloween goodies

Munson Medical Center and the Northern Michigan Diabetes Initiative are again partnering to promote healthy eating habits while giving back to troops this Halloween.

Children and their parents are invited to bring a portion of their sweet stash, either candy collected this Halloween or leftover treats that were not handed out, to Munson Diabetes Education at the Munson Professional Building or the hospital’s Community Health office at Munson Community Health Center. Collection times are from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 - 3.

Munson Medical Center endocrinologist Jill Vollbrecht, M.D., advises that moderation is key to the trick or treat fun.

“Having treats once in a while makes those treats special, but it is important to set the tone by limiting those treats to a reasonable number so they can be enjoyed in a reasonably healthy fashion,” she said. “Encouraging kids to pick 10 - 12 pieces of their Halloween stash, and donating the rest, not only encourages moderation, but instills a spirt of generosity toward others and gratitude toward our troops serving overseas.”

The candy will be donated to American Legion Auxiliary Units in Michigan’s Ninth District, to be packaged and sent to troops serving overseas. Last year, 431 pounds of candy were collected. Youngsters who donate will have their names entered into a drawing for a scooter.

Munson Diabetes Education is located in the Munson Professional Building, 1221 Sixth St., Suite 210 in Traverse City. The Community Health office is in Suite 102 at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. in Traverse City.
