At its April meeting, the West Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees awarded four $500 scholarships to graduating Manistee County high school students, courtesy of the Clara Kraus Saari Education Fund. The scholarship fund was established by Saari in 1980 to promote careers in health care.

The annual scholarship is available to Manistee County high school seniors planning to study a health care-related field. Eligible schools include Bear Lake, Brethren, CASMAN Academy, Manistee Catholic Central, Manistee Public, and Onekama.

The recipients submitted essays and applications that were reviewed by the scholarship committee of the Clara Kraus Saari Education Fund and then approved by the West Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees.

The 2015 scholarship recipients are:

  • Winter Smith from CASMAN Academy, who will study nursing at West Shore Community College and possibly transfer to Ferris State University. She is currently working in the Nutrition Services Department at West Shore Medical Center.

  • Alyssa Mikolajczak from Manistee Catholic Central, who will be attending West Shore Community College with plans to transfer to Ferris State University’s radiography program.

  • Syriah Dobis from Manistee High School, who will be attending Albion College in preparation for a career as a physical therapist.

  • Caitlin Zielinski from Onekama High School, who will be attending Northern Michigan College with plans to become a physician assistant.

No applications meeting eligibility criteria were received this year from Bear Lake High School or Brethren High School.
