West Shore Medical Center’s operating rooms are back in action after a few days offline to rectify condensation in the surgical area.
During last week’s warm, wet weather, condensation formed on the windows in some of the operating rooms, which are kept quite cool. “For patient safety, we immediately closed the area and called in health care engineering and construction experts to remedy the situation,” said Director of Plant Operations, Jerry Groll.
Fortunately, the experts found that damage was minimal, and only minor construction was required. “Some of the walls had gotten damp with condensation, so we removed and replaced drywall throughout,” said Groll. “We also increased insulation and added moisture barrier material to prevent a recurrence.”
“We are very sorry for the inconvenience experienced by our patients and appreciate their understanding,” said James Barker, West Shore Medical Center’s CEO. “Patient safety is always our foremost concern. We are doing all we can to accommodate the patients whose procedures were rescheduled.”
This situation demonstrates that the safeguards the hospital has in place are working. “The environment in our operating suites is closely monitored,” said Groll. “If humidity or temperature get out of optimal range, our technicians are alerted and can immediately begin working to fix the problem.”
