West Shore Medical Center’s Sleep Disorders Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
The accreditation recognizes the hospital program meets or exceeds all standards for professional health care as designated by the academy. Standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance.
“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates West Shore Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center on meeting the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Timothy Morgenthaler, M.D., president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “West Shore Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center is an important resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
West Shore Sleep Disorders Center Medical Director James Milliken, M.D., FAASM, said patients are referred to the center by a primary care physician. Some indications of a sleep disorder may include excessive snoring, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, restlessness, gasping for breath while sleeping, and daytime sleepiness. The center evaluates patients for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, REM behavior disorders, insomnia, and epilepsy, just to name a few.
A sleep study typically involves an overnight stay in one of the center’s comfortable hotel-like rooms where sleep technicians monitor one’s sleep cycle using digital computer diagnostic technology. A registered polysomnographic technologist will review and analyze the results in preparation for interpretation by a sleep specialist.
The West Shore Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center is located at 1465 E. Parkdale Ave. in Manistee. For more information on the center, call (231) 398-1675 or email sleepstaff@wsmed.org.
