What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. If you have diabetes, it means your body does not make enough (or any) insulin or your body does not use insulin well. Insulin helps change glucose into energy needed for your body to carry out basic tasks and ultimately to keep you alive.
