Munson Family Medicine Residency Program
The Munson Family Medicine Residency Program integrates osteopathic and allopathic medicine together, with the resources of Munson Medical Center, a regional referral center repeatedly recognized for high quality care. This dual accreditation 6/6/6 program accepts both DO and MD trainees.
This program is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) and with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSUCHM).
It is a rural-based program located in beautiful Traverse City, Mich. and is structured to train physicians for rural and small town practice. Ambulatory, hospital, and community-based training are utilized throughout the residency.
The Munson Family Medicine Residency prepares residents for full-spectrum care including inpatient, outpatient, obstetrics, and office-based procedures with a focus on providing health care in rural communities. In this unopposed program, residents work directly with attending physicians on consults and iterations.
Academics
Our program is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and a member of the Statewide Campus System.
The Statewide Campus System (SCS) is an OPTI (Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution) that enhances the quality of postdoctoral education through collective efforts by 42 hospital and academic members. The SCS of MSUCOM provides educational programs and opportunities for osteopathic, as well as allopathic residents and fellows, in Michigan.
About once a month, our residents travel as a group to Lansing for a 1-2 day specialized course. Courses include:
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics
- Advanced Pediatric Life Support
- Business and Legal Considerations
- Dermatology
- Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine
- Osteopathic Manipulation
- Women’s Health
While this monthly conference is hosted by the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Munson Family Medicine is unique in that we send both our osteopathic and allopathic residents to this conference.
Aside from the excellent learning opportunities, these road trips give our residents a great opportunity to build camaraderie and catch up with one another.

Residents also have the opportunity to participate in research projects. Past residents and faculty research has included efficacy of simulation for ACLS performance, marijuana use in pregnancy, and the introduction of CPAP with our partner institution Chogoria PCEA Hospital in Kenya.
International Medicine
We have built a strong relationship with Chogoria PCEA Hospital in Chogoria, Kenya. Through this partnership, our residents have the opportunity to travel to Kenya to practice international medicine while helping Chogoria PCEA Hospital establish a family medicine residency. We also share technology and clinical protocols with the hospital.
