Interlochen students present ‘This Place Feels Familiar’ artwork on May 19

Art inspired at Cowell Family Cancer Center will go on exhibit with a special launch from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the cancer center.

Students from the Aesthetics of Health Class led by Interlochen Arts Academy’s Visual Art Department faculty member Megan Hildebrandt will present their “This Place Feels Familiar” art inspired by cancer center staff and patient interactions during the past year. Interlochen partnered with the cancer center to explore the intersection of arts education and health care.

“I have seen the students become a lot more flexible and open to the life experiences of others,” Hildebrandt said. “Having patients, caregivers, family members and oncology staff visit our studios has had a profound impact on the empathy and understanding evident in our students’ visual art and their character and integrity as young adults.”

During the exhibit opening, students will present a special portrait of Casey G. Cowell, a trustee of Interlochen Arts Academy and member of the Munson Healthcare Board of Directors.

“We’re inviting the community to come and experience the creativity that resulted from this collaboration,” said Katie Horvath, support services manager for the cancer center.

The exhibit will be on display through the spring and summer in the cancer center’s Reflection Gallery on the third floor and Health and Wellness Suite on the second floor.
