CDC Study: 2/3 of Adults Report Adverse Childhood Experiences

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are preventable, potentially traumatic events that occur among persons aged <18 years. Toxic stress from ACEs can change brain development and affect how the body responds to stress. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. In a CDC study, among adults surveyed during 2011–2020, ~2/3 reported at least 1 ACE; 1 in 6 reported 4+ ACEs.
