Kalkaska Memorial Health Center offers continuum of care

Winter brings challenges as well as beauty.

The same is true in the seasons of life. Eyes may not see as well to drive at night and those legs find climbing the stairs at home more difficult. Gardening may become more of a chore than a pleasing hobby.

Despite those challenges, the sense of adventure, learning, and a wisdom sculpted by the winds of adversity beats in the heart.

At Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, area residents facing the challenges of aging can enjoy a life of comfort, friendship, security, and satisfaction through a continuum of services designed especially for them in assisted living or long-term care.

At Kalkaska Memorial Assisted Living, residents can live as independently as they are able in a worry free home-like environment.

“We offer apartment living with access to 24-hour assistance if needed,” said Barbara Hulwick, R.N., nursing director at the facility. Residents have individualized service plans that can include medication management, appointment coordination, and personal care and assistance.

All residents enjoy apartments with kitchenettes, barrier-free bathrooms, cable TV, local phone service, housekeeping and laundry service, and an emergency wireless call system. Community space includes two fireplaces, a great room for meals and entertaining, indoor and outdoor porches, a library, café for socializing, movies, and more.

At the hospital’s five-star rated Eden Center, Director Renee Cunningham, R.N., said skilled nursing care is available that honors each resident’s needs while promoting growth and enjoyment. Registered nurses are on duty 24/7. The center offers individualized care that includes a Legacy Home of semi-private and private rooms, as well as a Memory Care Unit that provides a compassionate and secure setting with decreased stimulation, which helps residents remain calm and content.

The hospital also recently opened its first of two Green House® homes adjacent to the hospital. Each home features 10 private bedrooms and bathrooms along with shared “family” space for cooking, dining, and socializing. The homes are fully licensed skilled nursing care delivered in a small-scale setting.

Each building operates like a home where residents can enjoy time with each other in common living spaces that include a living room, dining room, and kitchen area.

“We believe life is meant to be enjoyed, not simply endured,” Cunningham said. “All of our hospital services such as therapy, dialysis, and much more, are on site. And residents will find we not only will care for you, but about you.”
