New facilities provide residential living, skilled care for elders

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center invites the public to preview one of its new Green House® homes – a new concept in elder care.

“Green House homes can be summarized as facilities that do not just create a home-like environment, but in fact they are a home,” said Kevin Rogols, hospital administrator. “It is a very different concept in long-term care to meet the needs of our community.”

Designed like a private home, both Green House facilities adjacent to the hospital feature 10 private bedrooms and bathrooms along with shared “family” space for cooking, dining, and socializing. The homes are fully licensed skilled nursing care delivered in small-scale setting.

The public is invited to see the green-sided south house on Sunday, Jan. 24, from noon - 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Earlier this month, the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Board Chair Dan Johnson, township leaders, and Chamber of Commerce ambassadors helped cut the ribbon to open the new north home. Residents will move into that facility beginning Jan. 14. The south home will become operational in early spring.

Each building operates like a home where residents can enjoy time with each other in common living spaces that include a living room, dining room, and kitchen area. Staff dedicated to the home have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with residents while meeting individualized care needs and preferences.

“If someone wants a late night snack, you can come right up to the counter and we will make you a sandwich,” Rogols said.

Construction efforts led by general contractors Spence Brothers included dozens of jobs for local Kalkaska residents. Rogols and Johnson commended construction crews for their quality work.

“We are also proud that the project was on time and under budget,” Rogols said.

The homes are located at 419 Coral St. in Kalkaska.
