Physician specialists provide a wide array of services at gleaming facility

Sometimes that impulse to show the kids some hot moves from those long-past basketball glory days does not turn out so well.

After the initial pain in the knee, it swells, and the doctor suspects a torn cartilage. In Kalkaska, fixes for the bad knee, painful shoulder, or for that matter hernia repair, gall bladder surgery, colonoscopy, cataract removal, and much more can be performed close to home at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center’s Surgical Services.

Orthopedic surgeon B. Scott Groseclose, M.D., has been performing outpatient orthopedic procedures at the hospital for the past five years.

“We’re starting to do a lot more outpatient orthopedic procedures, just basic procedures, knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy,” he said. “We also do procedures such as carpal tunnel, trigger finger, and sometimes some nerve decompressions of the elbow.”

Since the outpatient services building opened in 2009, partnerships with physician specialists have created opportunities for more outpatient surgeries to be performed close to home. The department is located on the second floor of the Outpatient Services Building at the hospital.

All surgeries performed in the surgical suite involve some monitored recovery time and then the patient goes home the same day. The health care professionals involved strive to make the experience as stress free as possible.

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Surgical Services Manager Danielle Hamernik said in the past year more than 1,200 patients have chosen to have their outpatient surgeries performed at the gleaming facility.

“Patients who have had their surgery here always are surprised by how beautiful and up-to-date our facility is and the personal attention they receive from our staff and physicians,” she said. All surgical procedures performed at the hospital are scheduled through referrals from primary care providers, or for eye procedures, by one’s optometrist. Physicians providing surgical services are: general surgeons Robert Dotterer, M.D., and Michael Vanderkolk, M.D.; gynecologist William Nowak, D.O.; ear, nose and throat specialist Harry Borovik, M.D.; podiatrist Ronald Olm; orthopedic surgeon Groseclose; ophthalmologist Kenneth Gum, M.D.; and gastroenterologists J.P. Milliken, M.D., and Mark Brewster, M.D.
