Managing Refusal of Blood Transfusion

Managing Refusal of Blood Transfusion
10.05.2023

When a blood transfusion is medically indicated, the provider should explain the benefits, risks, and alternatives of the blood transfusion to the patient. If a patient refuses the transfusion, a new form has been developed to further explore and understand patients' reasons for the refusal and if they will accept other blood products. For example, if a patient is refusing a blood transfusion for religious or conscious objection reasons, are they willing to accept albumin or platelets?

The new Confirmation of Choice to Refuse/Accept Designated Treatments Utilizing Blood Products (form 0318) is available here.
