Seven Health System Facilities Open for Region’s Women on Saturday, Oct. 20
Helping area women find time for a mammography screening is important and on the agenda this month for Munson Healthcare.
Seven health system facilities are joining efforts to offer a special mammography screening day on Saturday, Oct. 20, for women who have a hard time making medical appointments during a busy work week.
“We wanted to make something convenient for those women in the area who for one reason or another have not had the opportunity to be screened in the past few years,” said Kathy LaRaia, executive director of Oncology Services at Munson Healthcare. “We hope this will help encourage them to come in and get screened.”
Participating Facilities
- Kalkaska Memorial Health Center
- Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital
- Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital
- Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital
- Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital
- Munson Healthcare Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort
- Munson Medical Center’s Smith Family Breast Health Center in Traverse City
Statistics for the state show 123 women out of every 100,000 in the state will develop breast cancer. The rate is more significant in some northern Michigan counties.
Call Your Provider to Schedule a Mammogram
While mammograms do not prevent breast cancer, detecting cancer as early as possible helps save lives. Experts recommend women over age 40 get regular screening mammograms.
All screenings require an order from a health care provider. Women should contact their provider to obtain an order to make an appointment at a facility convenient for them.
Women without a primary care provider may call Munson Healthcare’s HealthLink to find one in their area at 800-533-5520.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid cover mammography screening. Women without health insurance coverage may call Munson Healthcare financial counselors for assistance at 231-935-7422.
