Effective Dec. 1, we have implemented a notice of non-coverage on all custodial placements (long-term care, adult foster care, and assisted living) not directly related to the acute medical condition we are treating.
This notice informs patients they may be held financial liable for care delivered if their insurance does not deem it medically necessary.
An example would be a dementia patient who is living with their children as caregivers, but the family feels they can no longer care for the patient so the family brings the patient to the ED for placement. We would:
-
notify the patient and family of the financial obligation/notice of non-coverage
-
provide a list of wrap-around resources to support them at home
-
offer guidance/support on how to navigate placement from home
Standardizing this process will:
-
reduce confusion
-
support appropriate long-term living placement of the patient, which would not be the hospital in these situations
-
align with other system patient liability processes (e.g., lab, radiology)
