Bring unused medications to Munson Community Health Center on Sept. 30
Make households safer by bringing unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to Munson Community Health Center between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Munson Medical Center, the Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (OPEN), and Traverse City Police Department are partnering to help prevent drug misuse and overdose in the community by offering an opportunity to properly dispose of unused medications.
Unused medications should not be flushed down toilets. Studies have shown that pills and medications can contaminate groundwater because septic systems and wastewater plants cannot process medication compounds. Residents may bring unused pain medications, sedatives and sleep medications, ADHD medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and pet and veterinary medicines to the disposal drop-off site.
While pills, capsules and patch forms of medications can be accepted, organizers ask the public not to bring inhalers, liquid medications, or medical sharps, such as hypodermic needles. Inhalers after 2014 may be emptied and placed in household trash. Liquids can be mixed with cat litter and disposed of in home trash. Sharps can be dropped off at Holli Home Health Care, 2062 N. US 31S, Suite, in Traverse City, weekdays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Munson Community Health Center is located at 550 Munson Avenue in Traverse City.
