In a heartwarming display of solidarity and compassion, employees at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital recently shaved their heads to raise funds for two colleagues battling cancer. The initiative, spearheaded by Karen Avery, aimed to provide both emotional and financial support to their colleagues during their challenging times.
Karen Avery, who has a personal history of loss to cancer, was the driving force behind the event. “Sarah and I decided to shave our heads in support of our two co-workers. This was my third time and Sarah’s first,” Karen explained. “When we shared our plan with the rest of the department, we decided to raise money as well, especially since one is unable to work due to treatments.”
There were other ways employees were able to show support, including purchasing a shirt to wear during the event and some cutting and donating their hair to make wigs for children. “I was thrilled to be part of this fundraising effort. It was emotional to see everyone come together to support our colleagues,” Sarah said. “I chose to participate because I care deeply for my co-workers. One of them has been a friend for about seven years.”
Anita Schwartz, one of the employees battling cancer, was diagnosed with melanoma in 2018. Anita has faced multiple recurrences and treatments. Despite the challenges, she has maintained a positive attitude. “Throughout this journey, I’ve kept a positive attitude, which helps get through the difficult times,” Anita said. She emphasized the importance of early detection, “If you notice something, get it checked as soon as you can. The sooner you get a diagnosis, the better your outcomes.”
Jami Young, another co-worker currently undergoing cancer treatment, was unable to be interviewed due to her treatments. However, the funds raised from the event were directed towards supporting her treatment costs and supplementing her income while she is unable to work.
The event, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective efforts. The employees of Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital have shown that even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
