SAVI SCOUT breast surgery guidance technology

Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) is proud to announce the acquisition of the SAVI SCOUT® Wire-Free Radar Localization System, a cutting-edge technology designed to improve the surgical experience and outcomes for breast cancer patients.

The SAVI SCOUT® system uses non-radioactive, radar technology to offer real-time guidance during breast surgery, enhancing the precision and effectiveness of tumor localization and removal.

"Breast cancer surgery can be both physically and emotionally challenging for patients. We constantly seek ways to improve their experience and outcomes," said Ryan Hoenicke, MD, Diagnostic Radiologist on medical staff at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital. "The SAVI SCOUT system eliminates the need for a preoperative wire placement in breast tissue to locate a tumor, addressing one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery."

The SAVI SCOUT® system involves placing a tiny reflector in the target tissue, such as a tumor or lymph node, either days or weeks before surgery. During the surgical procedure, the SCOUT guide utilizes radar signals to accurately detect the location of the reflector, ensuring precise tumor localization within 1mm accuracy. This technology allows surgeons to plan the incision strategically, potentially improving cosmetic outcomes and reducing the likelihood of needing follow-up surgeries.

The SAVI SCOUT® system offers numerous benefits for patients, including:

  • increased accuracy, which enhances the probability of complete tumor removal;
  • improved patient comfort by reducing the discomfort and anxiety associated with traditional wire localization;
  • flexible scheduling, as the reflector can be placed at the patient’s convenience before the day of surgery;
  • Additionally, being non-radioactive ensures safety for both patients and medical staff.

Ultimately, precise tumor localization may lead to better surgical and cosmetic outcomes, significantly improving the overall treatment experience for breast cancer patients.

The SCOUT system has already been proven in over 450,000 procedures worldwide as of August 2023, showing a significant impact on patient satisfaction and surgical outcomes.

SAVI SCOUT® further augments regional breast care across the Munson Healthcare system. Munson offers 3D digital mammography for advanced detection, a 3D digital stereotactic table for precision biopsy, and now advanced tumor marking for safety with SAVI SCOUT®. This integration of technologies ensures patients receive the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art care available, from detection through treatment.

“We continue to invest in new technology to enhance the patient experience and outcomes at Otsego Memorial Hospital and for patients across Munson Healthcare’s east region, so they don’t have to travel far for exceptional care,” said Chris Squire, President of Otsego Memorial Hospital. “We’re grateful for the community’s support in making this investment possible.”

The acquisition of the SAVI SCOUT® system was made possible through the generosity of a donor to the Munson Healthcare Foundations, demonstrating the critical role that community support plays in enhancing our medical capabilities and patient care.
