As part of proactive medication safety work, MHC Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee has approved a single concentration of oxytocin premixed solution to be used throughout the MHC system (30 units in 500 mL).
Providers are asked to only use the standard premixed solution of oxytocin that is provided by the MHC Pharmacy (i.e., no bedside compounding).
This change in practice for standardizing a single concentration of oxytocin follows recommendations by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Targeted Medication Safety Best Practices for Hospitals (2022-2023). For details, read “Oxytocin Safety Best Practices.”
