On National Rural Health Day, five Munson Healthcare hospitals are recognized

Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital and four other Munson Healthcare hospitals recently received recognition from the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health and iVantage Health Analytics for performance excellence.

Nearly 1,300 rural hospitals nationally were recognized in one or more of four categories with 77 rural hospitals in Michigan among them. Hospital performance was measured in Quality, Outcomes, Patient Satisfaction and Financial Strength as compared to all acute care hospitals in the nation.

Paul Oliver was the only Munson Healthcare hospital to win two awards. It was recognized with 17 other rural hospitals in the state for excellence in quality and with seven other rural hospitals for excellence in financial strength. Only 15 rural hospitals in the state won more than one award.

Other Munson Healthcare hospitals recognized today are Munson Healthcare Cadillac and Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital for excellence in outcomes; and Mackinac Straits Health System and Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital for excellence in patient satisfaction.

“Offering residents across northern Michigan access to quality health care close to home is something our organization strives for daily,” said Ed Ness, president and CEO of Munson Healthcare. “We’re thankful for this recognition that again affirms the efforts of staff and physicians on behalf of our patients as well as the leadership of our hospital board members as they thoughtfully meet the health care challenges in their communities.”

The national rankings have been determined through the Hospital Strength INDEX, the industry’s most objective and comprehensive assessment of rural hospital performance. In partnership with the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health, iVantage Health Analytics developed this data-driven program to identify excellence across a broad spectrum of indicators relevant to hospital performance and patient care.

To be recognized for excellence in quality, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital performed in the top quartile of hospitals based on a quality index of five indicators that scored care for heart failure, heart attacks, pneumonia and more. For financial strength, the hospital scored in the top quartile based on an index of four economic indicators.

“We strive to provide the best for our community and we appreciate this affirmation of both our clinical care and fiscal management on behalf of our area residents,” said Peter Marinoff, president of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. “I am thankful for staff and physicians who provide 24/7 care for our patients, and for volunteers, board members, donors, and our community who value this facility and offer their strong support for rural health care.”
