In addition to COVID, providers are asked to be on vigilant about 3 other trending pathogens.

Candida Auris

  • MI healthcare facilities have reported outbreaks and increased cases of infections caused by candida auris, a drug-resistant fungal pathogen that has a high mortality rate. Keep this pathogen in mind if you have patients with refractory sepsis who have been on broad spectrum antibiotics and have invasive lines.
  • Please continue to practice antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Providers are also asked to cooperate if you are contacted by MDHHS as they are closely monitoring these candida auris infections.

Acute Pediatric Hepatitis

  • CDC/WHO are tracking clusters of acute pediatric hepatitis, with adenovirus 41 as the likely pathogen.
  • Please notify MDHHS if you diagnose a case of acute pediatric hepatitis.

Avian Flu

  • There has been 1 confirmed case of human avian flu transferred from a bird in CO and 1 case is under investigation with tests pending in MI.
  • In Michigan, there have been 24 cases of avian flu identified in birds, including home flocks, commercial flocks, home pets, and wild birds.
  • Local health departments are reporting a reluctance of people to report sick birds, so please encourage your patients to work with MDHHS if this comes up.
  • Please notify MDHHS if you diagnose a case of avian flu.
