Munson Medical Center today dedicated its renovated office space for cardiologists and heart outpatients at 1200 Sixth Street.

The Maxon Advanced Cardiac Care Clinic included renovations of the first and second floor of the building that were funded by a $3 million grant from the Maxon Foundation, U.S. Bank, N.A., Trustee, of Cincinnati, Ohio. The grant also included purchase and renovations of a building in Grayling for expanded heart care.

“Here in Traverse City, we’ve nearly doubled our available space and added more capacity to see patients,” said Dino Recchia, M.D., FACC, FHFSA. “Our practice has more than 52,000 patient visits a year, and 60 percent of those are here in Traverse City.”

In Grayling, the Maxon grant funded a facility that in 2017 will see more than 3,000 patient visits and 400 cardiac tests. Six providers travel to the facility saving Grayling-area residents more than 320,000 miles of commuting to the Traverse City office.

Munson Healthcare President and CEO Ed Ness thanked the Maxon Foundation representatives at today’s ribbon cutting for their generosity and their commitment to improving health care in Traverse City and Grayling.

“Their generosity has really allowed us to expand access to high quality outpatient heart services in these communities,” he said. “Northern Michigan residents are the real winners.”

Office space at the Traverse City building was originally designed to support 14 cardiologists. But now Traverse Heart and Vascular has grown to more than 20.

Renovations on the first floor of the building involve state-of-the-art 3D ultrasound technology and additional patient exam space. Plans call for the Heart Failure Clinic to move to the building from the hospital. The additional capacity will allow the future development of a cardiology urgent access program to facilitate evaluation for patients needing to be seen within 48 - 72 hours.

Provider office space was expanded on the second floor and lab space has also been created in the building so patients will not have to leave the building for a blood draw.

In addition to facilities in Traverse City and Grayling, Traverse Heart and Vascular cardiologists see outpatients in their Cadillac clinic and travel regularly to other Munson Healthcare hospitals to offer specialty clinics close to home.

The Maxon Foundation, U.S. Bank, N.A., Trustee, was founded by the late Glenway Maxon, Jr. It is held by the U.S. Bank in Cincinnati. The specific focus of giving is for health care related needs including: improving access to health care services; building capacity for health care through equipment and capital improvements; and recruiting physicians and health care professionals to underserved areas.
