Stay Alert: Scammers Impersonating DEA Agents

Stay Alert: Scammers Impersonating DEA Agents
04.04.2024
Please be aware of a scam where a caller identifies themself as a DEA agent and often uses an urgent or aggressive tone:
  • Threatens arrest or prosecution.
  • May threaten revocation of a provider’s DEA registration.
  • References NPI numbers and/or state license numbers and may claim that patients are making accusations against that practitioner.

Though the narrative varies, a portion of an actual scam call was captured by the DEA and can be heard here.

The DEA will never phone to demand money or ask for personal information. Notification of a legitimate DEA investigation or legal action will always be communicated in person or via official letter.

Remember to remain continuously aware, and exercise deep caution when receiving calls or emails requesting or demanding any kind of personal information.

If you receive a call from a person claiming to be with the DEA, report the incident to MHC’s Legal Department at 231-935-6553. Reporting these scam calls will help federal authorities find, arrest, and stop the criminals engaged in this fraud.
