Kalkaska and Fife Lake area youth benefit from focused health care programs

Whether it’s a sore throat, a need for a tetanus booster, or just somebody to talk with about a concern – Teen Health Corner provides someone who can help.

The centers, located at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center and at Forest Area Middle /High School offer primary care for students or others 10 to 21 as well as counseling and in-school and after-school education opportunities. “

All of our staff members really do enjoy working with young people,” said Joanna Durfee, R.N., manager of the Teen Health Corners. “Our services are affordable, convenient, and appointments are very easy to schedule.”

The in- and after-school programming offered for students gives them information in the areas of nutrition, fitness, cooking, tobacco prevention, stress reduction, and much more.

The Kalkaska Teen Health Corner is open five days a week with counseling services available three days a week. Meanwhile, the Forest Area Teen Health Corner is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with counseling available all three days. Providers at the centers include Christina Weasel-Brege’, PA-C, and registered dietician; Rachel Soles, FNP; and Kimberly Michels, FNP. Counseling services are provided by David He’bert, LPC, and Therese Kaufman, MSW. Both centers offer care during school breaks, including the summer.

Primary care services include sick visits, preventive care, specialty referrals, dental referrals, dealing with sprains and strains, strep testing, X-rays, and lab tests. Immunizations are available to help students stay up-to-date with vaccine needs.

Durfee said all insurances are accepted, including Medicaid Health Plans. For families without insurance, a sliding fee scale ensures services are affordable and staff can help families apply for health insurance online.
