MHC has adopted a system approach to elective surgeries after COVID infection that is consistent with our historical standard practice of delaying elective surgeries following a respiratory illness.
-
Elective procedures should not be performed in patients who are symptomatic with COVID-19 or who are suspected of having COVID-19.
-
Infectious Disease, in coordination with surgical and anesthesia leaders across the system and supported by System Clinical Incident Command (SCIC), recommends the delay of elective surgery after COVID-19 infection based on the severity of the infection:
-
asymptomatic patient or a patient who only had mild, non-respiratory symptoms: 4 weeks
-
patient with respiratory symptoms who did not require hospitalization: 6 weeks
-
patient who is diabetic, immunocompromised, or was hospitalized with COVID-19: 8-10 weeks
-
patient who was admitted to an ICU due to COVID-19 infection: 12 weeks
-
-
If surgery is deemed necessary during a period of likely increased risk, those potential risks should be documented in the medical record and included in the informed consent and shared decision-making with the patient.
