A group of 5 medical organizations have released updated recommendations for the transmission and infection prevention of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
Updated MRSA guidance includes:
-
emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship and discernment about when and when not to prescribe
-
using surveillance techniques to detect anyone who may be asymptomatic carrier of MRSA
-
decolonization to help eradicate or reduce MRSA
-
implementing certain infection prevention strategies
-
methods to prevent surgical site infections where MRSA is commonly contracted
In the U.S., MRSA cases rose 41% during the pandemic and account for ~10% of hospital-associated infections.
