West Shore Medical Center will host a series of free sports medicine clinics for Manistee County high school athletes this November. The clinics, to be overseen by orthopedic surgeon Mark D’Angelo, DO, and athletic trainer Kevin Kott, ATC, will be held November 5, 12, and 19 in the Rehabilitation Department at the hospital from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is not required; students will be seen on a first come, first served basis.
“We invite area high school athletes participating in any sport to stop by a clinic if they are experiencing sore muscles, swelling, achy joints, or other discomfort as a result of their sports involvement,” said Dr. D’Angelo. “We want to ensure our young athletes remain healthy, train correctly, and do not injure themselves.”
At the clinics, professionals from West Shore’s Sports Medicine program will perform quick evaluations and offer advice only. “Students determined to require a more thorough examination, testing, or treatment will be referred to the appropriate health care provider,” said Dr. D’Angelo. Sports physicals will not be performed at these clinics, which are designed for the evaluation of recent sports-related injuries or concerns.
West Shore Medical Center launched its comprehensive sports medicine program this fall with the aim of safeguarding the health of athletes, preventing sports injury, and promoting wellness for the entire community. “We are working with the athletic directors and staff in all area schools to promote safety and fitness,” said Kott. “It’s wonderful to work with the kids and know we’re having a positive impact.”
West Shore Medical Center is located at 1465 E. Parkdale Ave., in Manistee. The Rehabilitation Department is on the lower level.
