The Manistee artist works primarily in soft pastel but also uses other media, such as oil, colored pencil, pen and ink, and scratch board, for expression. Van Leen attended Rocky Mountain School of Art (now RMCAD) in Denver, Col., where her art education gave her the opportunity to explore many artistic methods, but having worked in soft pastel since she was five years old it is her favorite and primary medium.
Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Dennos Museum, the Holland Area Art Council, Oliver Art Center, Shiawassee Art Center, Manistee Art Institute and the Michigan History Center. She has received awards in local, regional and national competitions, and her work is held in private and institutional collections in the U.S. and other countries.
The Healing Arts Gallery, developed in conjunction with the Manistee Art Institute, was established to support West Shore Medical Center’s goal of creating a comfortable, attractive, and healing environment for patients, visitors, and staff. The public is invited to browse the gallery, which is located near the Café on the main floor of West Shore Medical Center at 1465 E. Parkdale Ave. in Manistee.
