West Shore Medical Center offers some important winter tips

Northern Michigan’s winter is back and staff at West Shore Medical Center reminds area residents to use caution and stay prepared.  Following are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for winter preparedness:

  • Walking on snow or ice is especially treacherous, and wearing proper footwear is essential. A pair of well-insulated boots with good rubber treads is a must for walking during or after a winter storm. Keeping a pair of rubber over-shoes with good treads that fit over your street shoes is a good idea during the winter months.

  • When walking at night, wear bright clothing or reflective gear. Dark clothing makes it difficult for motorists to spot pedestrians.

  • Keep a back-up heating source such as a portable space heater, kerosene heater, and extra blankets or sleeping bags should power loss affect home heating. Households with a fireplace or woodstove should ensure they have a ready supply of dry wood on hand.

  • Make a family communication plan so in the event of a winter emergency that cuts off cell phone and landline communication, family members know how to connect with one another or where they will meet.

West Shore Medical Center provides 24-hour emergency care, physical and occupational therapy, and other important services for Manistee-area residents’ needs this winter. For more information, call (231) 398-1000.
