About Kalkaska Memorial Health Center

You might not expect to see a baby grand piano inside a rural hospital in northern Michigan, but Kalkaska Memorial Health Center (KMHC) specializes in providing more than is expected.

This community non-profit health center serves the greater Kalkaska County region with a wide variety of care options not often found in a small community. Services include outpatient surgery, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, a top quality dialysis center, diagnostics, nationally-accredited diabetes education, an aquatic therapy pool, sleep disorders center, primary and specialty care, and nationally-ranked long-term care facilities.

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center is one of eight community hospitals in the Munson Healthcare system, northern Michigan’s leading and largest healthcare provider. KMHC is located about 25 miles from Traverse City. It is owned by Kalkaska County’s 12 townships and is supported in part by a tax levy that provides funding for capital improvements and projects. KMHC has served residents and visitors since 1953. It is also part of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Network.

Award-wining Long-term Care

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center’s Long-term Care was named a Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report. Only 13 percent of the nation’s nursing homes received the “Best” designation. The facility also received the Governor’s Award of Excellence for quality long-term care.

The expanding KMHC campus includes two state-of-the-art Green House homes, the only ones in northern Michigan, that provide a truly home-like environment for loved ones who require 24-hour care. The facility also offers a continuum of care for seniors including licensed Home for the Aged Assisted Living apartments and a 104-bed Long-term Care facility that includes specially-designed dementia care

What Patients Say About Us

  •  “Thanks for the wonderful treatment my wife received after being thrown from her horse. All the staff was very responsive and showed true professional care. After several procedures it was determined to be a fracture of her back, she is home staying comfortable. Once again, thanks to the ER staff!”
  • “We've been to the ER twice in 3 months, once with a broken wrist and once for stitches. Both times we had awesome experiences and the staff were all wonderful. Our visit for the broken wrist was during the big storm in August, and although they were very busy and had malfunctioning computers due to the weather, we didn't wait that long and the staff was working so hard for all the patients. Great job, guys!”
  • “I just want to say thank you to all the care team and staff. My parents are everything to me and thank you so much.”
  • “Thank you so much for all the extra care and love you give to my Mom. It means so much to know she is in good hands.”
