Screening
Colon cancer is the second largest cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The biggest breakthrough in the treatment of colon cancer is the increased emphasis on preventative screening.
It is recommended by the American Cancer Society that everyone have a colonoscopy at age 45, because colon cancer usually presents no symptoms until its more advanced stages. If a relative has been diagnosed with colon cancer, screenings may be needed even sooner.
Diagnosed in its earliest stages, colon cancer can be effectively treated and cured.
Diagnosis
We offer sophisticated diagnostic procedures, including:
- Colonoscopy - Examines the lining of the colon.
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - Examines the inside of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon.
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) - Examines the upper intestinal tract.
- Esophageal Manometry - Records and evaluates the muscular function of the esophagus.
- Capsule Endoscopy - Takes photos of the entire digestive tract via a pill-sized camera (most effective in visualizing the small bowel).
- Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) - Evaluates the anatomy of the bile and/or pancreatic duct.
- Liver Biopsy - Used to take a small sample of liver tissue, which can then be examined for abnormalities of the liver.
Treatment
Our team of physicians are trained in the most advanced treatment options of the digestive system. We will work with you and your primary care physician to determine the appropriate treatment.
Patient Information
Your Appointment
Our goal is to make your experience with us a positive one. In order to ensure this, we ask for your assistance in the following ways:
- Please bring a complete list of all current medications, including strength and dosage. If you are unable to do this, you may bring all your current medications in their original containers.
- Please bring all current insurance cards or insurance carrier information.
- Please contact your physician to assure that all patient information has been forwarded to our office. This may include copies of test results, office notes, x-ray reports, and other materials. All HMO insured patients should contact their primary care physician to be sure that a referral has been made to this office.
- Please be sure that any paperwork necessary for your referral has been sent to the HMO prior to your scheduled visit.
If you are a new patient, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to complete necessary paperwork. Please write down any health concerns, symptoms, or questions that you would like to discuss with the doctor.
Appointment Policies
We believe in the value of the patient’s time and will always try to avoid long waiting periods. Occasionally, urgent consultations or emergency room visits do precipitate unforeseen delays, and we request your patience. If timing is critical to your schedule, please notify us ahead of time, and we may be able to accommodate you by scheduling you as the first appointment in the morning or the first afternoon appointment. If delays occur on a day when your schedule does not allow you to stay, you can be rescheduled either later that day or at another time. Because of the specialized nature of our practice, it may take longer than you experience with your primary physician to get a routine appointment with our office.
You can help to reduce the delay by being aware of the following:
- If you are unable to keep your appointment, we ask that you notify us by phone 2 business days in advance.
- Plan ahead so that you are able to arrive on time, or preferably a few minutes early for your scheduled appointment.
- Please notify us by phone if you expect to be late. We may be able to adjust our schedule accordingly.
- Any patient who misses two new patient appointments without calling to cancel or reschedule will not be rescheduled without a new referral from their primary physician.
