Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program
The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program works closely with community partners and local providers to support lifelong behavior changes that foster a healthier lifestyle. This unique program is designed specifically to help patients who have chronic disease and may be experiencing food insecurity learn the foundational basics of healthy eating while enjoying cooking demonstrations and tastings at their local farmers market. As a bonus, patients receive tokens that they can use to buy yummy fresh fruits and vegetables or even seedlings to grow their own nourishing gardens.
Munson sponsors this unique program in partnership with MSU Extension and together we have expanded to work with Traverse Health Clinic and Northwest Michigan Health Services. The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription program – one of our longest-standing programs – has been offered in Munson communities since 2016, serving over 1,500 people and offering more than 50,000 in tokens to purchase fruits and vegetables.

“I was able to successfully access fruits and vegetables for my family. I would not have been able to provide otherwise, plus these classes were very educational and I always learn something new by attending. Also, I was able to access these classes via the internet that will allow me to continue to educate myself because I have lack of transportation. The staff are very efficient in making this program easy to navigate. I love being able to taste these recipes. I am very thankful for being able to access fresh fruit and veggies, plus I am also thankful for the easy access to a large amount of knowledge about fruits and vegetables that they provide every time I attend a class.” — Amanda L.
