Core Services at Munson Medical Center

Healthcare has never been simple, but the COVID-19 pandemic has driven us to go beyond what we ever thought was possible and has pushed Munson Healthcare to remodel the way we provide care for patients, while keeping staff protected in their new work environments. Despite these challenges, we have learned through this crisis that our ability to respond to patients in need is crucial – no matter the medical emergency.

Although it is uncertain what the future may bring, we know by maintaining and strengthening core services at Munson Medical Center, we are securing healthcare for future generations to come. Our primary focus is, and will always be, your health, safety, and well-being.

Comprehensive Stroke Center

As the leading cause of disability in the United States, when you or a loved one experience stroke symptoms only one thing matters—getting medical help fast.

Our goal at Munson Healthcare is to ensure all patients, from year-round residents to summertime visitors, have access to comprehensive stroke care. Munson Medical Center, now equipped with two Biplane Imaging Labs, thanks to the generous support of donors, earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification by The Joint Commission in December 2023. Biplane Imaging is one of the most advanced interventional medical imaging technologies available and can make all the difference in recovery for patients with stroke or other severe neurovascular complications.

Ongoing needs for our stroke center include infrastructure support, additional technology for integrating care between Munson Medical Center and our community hospitals, and providing advanced training for physicians and clinical staff.

Surgical Services

No area of the hospital is subject to as much rapid growth and advancement in medical technology. The progressive expansion of surgical methods and equipment keeps surgical care and recovery local while improving patient experience. Using advanced, leading edge diagnostic and surgical technology, patients are provided with minimally invasive procedures, faster recovery, less pain and blood loss, and a lower chance of infection. To keep pace with the latest advancements, Munson Medical Center must regularly update and replace critical technology and equipment to keep surgical procedures local, while expanding the range of procedures available.

Originally built in the late 1980’s and designed to handle equipment from none operating rooms (ORs), we now have 17 fully-functional ORs, with an average of 17,000 surgeries per year. With plans to build four new ORs and “shell out” space for more as part of our north end expansion, it is time to create more space for our Central Processing Department (CPD). The plan is to construct a new CPD that will be able to handle the demands of 30 operating rooms – allowing us to continue to grow to meet the surgical needs of our community.

The total cost for these critical innovations at Munson Medical Center is $7,500,000.

Patient Needs

The Patient Needs Fund provides financial assistance for the urgent needs of patients during a health-related crisis. Medical social workers and case management staff identify and approve financial assistance through this fund, based on patient needs. Immediate assistance is often provided until other resources can be arranged in partnership with other human services agencies.

Help provided through the Patient Needs Fund includes:

  • Transportation support, which allows patients to travel to and from home for medical appointments.
  • Assistance with groceries, rent/mortgage payments, utilities, childcare payments, and more.
