Values in Action

As members of the Munson Healthcare Team, we find purpose in knowing that we have touched a life — a patient, a colleague, a family member — and made it better.

Values in Action allows us an opportunity to celebrate those members of the Healthcare Team who exemplify our Values of Excellence, Exceptional Experiences, Creativity, Positivity and Teamness in their daily work. These Values ground us, drive us, and define us.

Please share examples of how your teammates are living our Values by submitting a Values In Action form. We’ll celebrate some of these stories in The Compass and everyone who enters a form or is recognized will be entered into a drawing for fabulous prizes!

This Week's Highlight: Teamness

Put WE Before ME

We are not just a group of individuals, but a beloved community. We embrace Teamness — it’s an attitude, a vibe that we cultivate through mutual respect and complete transparency.

We put our teammates first, even when it’s hard to do. And build lasting, trusted relationships with one another. We believe in human kindness and strive to embody it in all our interactions.

As we roll out the new MHC Values, this week we are focusing on:

Putting Teamness into Practice

  • Make an active effort to be fully present, engaged and an participant in team meetings and activities.
  • Create a team-centered work environment by both offering to help a coworker who may need additional support and remembering to ask for help when needed too! Together, we are stronger!

Learning Opportunity: “Contributing to an Inclusive Culture””

  • Check out this course in HealthStream. In “Contributing to an Inclusive Culture,” learn how each of us has a role to play in creating an environment where our colleagues can thrive, not in spite of what makes them unique, but because of it. And learn how you can help build a culture of inclusion.

Activities

  • Department Activity – Think about the question: “What can you do to help your team today?” Use a white board or bulletin board with stickies and share. Submit a photo of your board to compass@mhc.net.
  • Individual Activity – Take a picture of your WE at MHC! Who are the people on your team (or a team you work with) who inspire you every day and bring out your best work? Share your pictures and stories by emailing compass@mhc.net. Responses earn an entry into our prize giveaways.
  • Any photos submitted that include members of the Healthcare Team need to be accompanied by a photo release form.

Values from Past Weeks

This Week's Highlight: Positivity

Act with Passion and Pride

We know anything is possible with the power of positivity, and that life is a gift we often hold in our hands. We lift each other up, believe in the goodness of others and give grace, even in the toughest situations.

As we roll out the new MHC Values, this week we are focusing on:

Putting Positivity Into Practice

  • At the end of your day, think of 3 good things that happened and write them down. This simple act can improve your outlook.
  • Take a moment to recognize someone for making your day better. It can be a simple “thank you,” a note or a Values in Action submission.

Learning Opportunity: “Boost Your Resilience”

  • Check out HealthStream for unlimited classes for all staff! In “Boost Your Resilience” you will learn how adversity, change, turbulence, and uncertainty can be part of any given day. While we successfully navigate most challenges, others require greater resilience – the ability to cope with stress and adversity. Resilience keeps us from feeling stuck. Learn key personality traits and skills to raise your resilience, and help power you through even the most challenging times.

Activities

  • Department Activity – We want an environment that makes you feel engaged, excited and wanting to contribute. Using your team whiteboard, capture what your team already does well, and what improvements need to be made to foster a positive team environment.
  • Individual Activity – Take a picture or video of a little thing that makes you smile at work. Share your pictures and videos by emailing compass@mhc.net. Responses earn an entry into our prize giveaways.
  • Any photos submitted that include members of the Healthcare Team need to be accompanied by a photo release form.

This Week's Highlight: Creativity

Be Bold, Try New Things

We believe that each of us has a creative spark. We embrace the courage to try new things and give permission to sometimes fail, because it is through sharing our failures that we grow and learn.

Our friends, families and neighbors deserve bold and innovative thinking, and we are proud to lead the way.

As we roll out the new MHC Values, this week we are focusing on:

Putting Creativity Into Practice

  • Be willing to try something new! Try little things that impact your own work. Have a big idea? Talk with your manager!
  • Is there something new coming your way? Think about how you respond to change and how you can turn a challenge into an opportunity!

Learning Opportunity: “Embracing Change”

  • Check out HealthStream for unlimited classes for all staff!
In “Embracing Change” you’ll learn about your Change IQ, the phases of change, and how you can bring bold new ideas to make changes in your department.

Activities

  • Department Activity – Using your team whiteboard or bulletin board, answer the question: “What is one bold idea we can try as a team to improve our work environment?” Submit a photo of your board to compass@mhc.net.
  • Individual Activity – What is something bold you have done in your life? Share your pictures and stories by emailing compass@mhc.net. Responses earn an entry into our prize giveaways.
  • Any photos submitted that include members of the Healthcare Team need to be accompanied by a photo release form.

This Week's Highlight: Exceptional Experiences

Surprise and Delight

We leave lasting impressions by ensuring exceptional experiences. Even the smallest moments have the power to change a life.

We know that healthcare can be hard at times and believe that no one should ever have to face it alone. We strive to go beyond what is expected in all we do.

As we roll out the new MHC Values, this week we are focusing on:

Putting Exceptional Experiences Into Practice

  • Connect with others whether you’re working with patients or on a virtual meeting: Make eye contact, smile and ask welcoming questions.
  • Work on-site? Make sure patients and visitors know their way by helping with directions or asking if you can walk them to their destination.

Learning Opportunity: “Steps for Great Service”

  • Check out this course in HealthStream! Customer experience is critically important. Our patients’ perception of how we make them feel affects their behaviors, builds memories, and drives their loyalty. In this course, “Steps for Great Service,” you will discover key steps to ensuring a successful patient experience.

Activities

  • Department Activity – What is one small thing you can do to improve the patient experience? Use a white board or bulletin board with stickies and share. Submit photos of your department activities (and a release form if Healthcare Team members are pictured) to compass@mhc.net
  • Individual Activity – Reflect on a time when you had a “Wow” experience with a business. Email compass@mhc.net to share what made it an exceptional experience. Responses earn an entry into our prize giveaways.

This Week's Highlight: Excellence

Expect nothing less

We hold ourselves to a high standard of excellence. We push ourselves and our teammates to do our very best, because we know every action we take has an impact on the lives of those around us.

Our pursuit of excellence requires curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the courage to step out of our comfort zones.

As we roll out the new MHC Values, this week we are focusing on:

Putting Excellence Into Practice

Two aspects of Excellence are safety and quality. Here are some practical things you can do to demonstrate Excellence every day.

  • Use the Safety Behaviors! Whether you’re avoiding injuries or preventing workplace violence — Prepare for the Day, demonstrate a Questioning Attitude, Support the Team, practice Attention to Detail and use Clear Communication.
  • See something, say something…report all near misses and events in VOICE.

Learning Opportunities

  • Check out in the HealthStream catalog for unlimited classes for all staff! There are topics that focus on quality — from wound care to diabetes management — plus, safety and healthcare business. Some examples include: Communication Lessons, Falls Prevention or Hand Hygiene: Basic Principles and Competency.

Activities

  • Department Activity – What is Excellence? Use a white board or bulletin board with stickies and share what Excellence means to you.
  • Individual Activity – Selfie Challenge. Finish this sentence: At MHC we have excellent _______________________. Write the word or phrase on a poster and take a selfie holding it!
  • Submit photos of your department or individual activities (and a release form) to compass@mhc.net.

The Values Manifesto

Every day at work, we find purpose in knowing that we have touched a life — a patient, a colleague, a family member — and made it better. We draw strength from our deep connections to the Northern Michigan communities we call home, and the traditions and memories that have shaped us. We know that each day, people depend on us and we are energized and humbled by this significant responsibility.

We hold ourselves to a high standard of excellence. We push ourselves and our teammates to do our very best, because we know every action we take has an impact on the lives of those around us. Our pursuit of excellence requires curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the courage to step out of our comfort zones.

These are the Values that ground us, drive us and define us. We are here for the love of our communities and for the people we serve with one purpose — to improve lives every day.
